USA State Requirements For Rebuilt - Reconstructed Salvage Vehicles:
All US States have a vehicle inspection requirement for any vehicles that are salvaged, rebuilt or self assembled with the intention that they be returned to road for either profit, personal or hobby interest purposes. There are varying terms used from state to state to describe rebuilt salvage vehicles - you will be applying for either a salvage title, a recontructed salvage title, a rebuilt salvage, self assembled title - some states place the rebuilt title category under the 'Hot Rod or Historical interest section of their DMV sites.
The purpose of the Vehicle Inspection is to prove that you are the owner of the rebuilt auto and its parts and to review all the ownership documents and VIN plates. The vehicle inspection is not meant to be a test of road worthyness, safety or quality of repairs made to your rebuilt car.
Generally, to initiate the testing porcedure, you should follow these steps:
· You need the Reconstructed Vehicle Inspection form either from the relevant state's DMV website (see the dropdown box at the bottom of the page) or from your local DMV registrar office.
· Once filled out, return the form and fee (the form/website should tell you who to make checks/money orders payable to) to the relevant registrar office
· The office should send you a reciept with a number you can present to your nearest State Highway Patrol Salvage Inspection Location (or state equivalent) - they will schedule an inspection appointment.
In general, to prepare for the inspection, be ready for the following:
· Your vehicle should be completely rebuilt and ready for highway use
· you should have all ownership documents and any spare parts reciepts to hand, some states also require photographic evidence of the work carried out on the vehicle.
· It may be necessary to leave the vehicle overnite. You may be asked to remove certain body parts before the inspection, or they may be removed during the inspection - usually to verify the VIN plates.
· If the inspectors determine a problem with your VIN plates/vehicle history, your vehicle may be impounded - not good!
It may be a good idea to do a vehicle history check before the inspection if you are unsure of your salvage repaired auto's history.
Make sure your rebuilt car meets these requirements or you may have to reschedule the vehicle inspection

Answer!
Start with the drop down box at the bottom of this page.

Select the state you are interested in and a popup box will appear with either the precisely relevant page on your state's DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) website (the preffered and most common result), OR the rebuilt salvage form you will need to fill in - which should have the relevent info on it - OR a manual issued by the state relating to issues of vehicle salvage.
SOME states are less helpfull than others over rebuilt salvage vehicle info although the majority have comprehensive DMV websites in their 'Vehicle Titles' section.
To use the dropdown box, you may have to 'Temporarily enable popups for this webpage' You will also need Adobe Reader installed on your computer to read some of the forms/manuals which are in .pdf form
You should now be on your way to a rebuilt salvage title!
